Microsoft Office is a well-known software package from Microsoft and includes some of the world’s most used applications, such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word. There are several versions of Office available, including Office 2021 and Microsoft 365. It is important to note that Office 365 has been renamed to Microsoft 365 since 2020, but the license remains the same. We will discuss the differences between Office 2021 and Microsoft 365, including available bundles and the included applications.

Which packages does Microsoft Office 2021 offer?

Microsoft Office 2021 offers 5 different packages. These are:

  • Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021 (not available from Vidasoft)
  • Microsoft Office for Home and Self-Employed 2021 (not available from Vidasoft)
  • Microsoft Office Standard 2021
  • Microsoft Office Professional 2021
  • Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2021

The Office 2021 Standard version includes Word, Excel, OneNote, Powerpoint, Outlook and Publisher. Access has been added to the package with Office 2021 Professional. Teams is only available with Office Professional Plus.

What versions does Microsoft Office 365 offer?

Office 365 has more variants on offer compared to Microsoft Office 2021. These are:

  • Microsoft Office 365 Business Standard – this is the standard Office 365 business package. 365 Business Standard includes Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Publisher, Access, and Teams.
  • Microsoft Office 365 Business Basic – as the basic 365 package includes Excel, PowerPoint, Word, OneNote and Teams.
  • Microsoft Office 365 Business Premium- 365 Business Premium offers the same applications as Business Standard with the addition of SharePoint, Exchange and Azure Protection.
  • Microsoft Office 365 Personal – intended for 1 user, Personal includes Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook. In addition, 365 Personal comes with 6TB OneDrive storage space.
  • Microsoft Office 365 Family – as the standard package of Office 365. Family includes Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook. The license comes with 6 TB of OneDrive storage space. It is intended for use by 2 to 6 people.
  • Microsoft Office 365 Apps – 365 Apps gives you access to Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Publisher, and Access, in addition to 1 TB of OneDrive storage.

What are the differences?

The main distinction between the two is the type of license. Office 365 works on a subscription basis, which means that you have to renew your license monthly or annually. On the other hand, Office 2021 is available as a perpetual license, meaning it is a one-time purchase with no renewal required.

Another difference is the duration of technical support. With Office 2021, support is limited to 60 days after purchase, while with Office 365, support remains valid as long as your subscription is active.

Furthermore, there is a difference in the update cycle. The applications within Office 365 continue to receive regular updates to provide new features and improvements. In contrast, support and updates for Office 2021 will end in October 2026, so no further updates will be available after that period.

It is important to consider these differences when choosing between Office 365 and Office 2021 so that you can choose the version that best suits your needs and preferences.
